The Cardano node GitHub page recently saw an update to Node 9.0, a pivotal release set to pave the way for the upcoming hard fork. This significant milestone in the world of cryptocurrencies marks another step forward for Cardano and its dedicated development team.

On July 8th, the much-anticipated “Node 9.0” was launched by the Cardano team led by founder Charles Hoskinson. This release is crucial as it serves as the final piece needed to facilitate the impending Chang hard fork, as revealed in a YouTube video by Hoskinson himself on July 7th.

The new software, deployed around 7 pm UTC, signifies a major breakthrough as it becomes the primary node capable of supporting the transition across the 9.0 hard fork boundary on mainnet and long-running testnets like PreProd. Hoskinson had hinted at this imminent release in a prior YouTube update where he mentioned it would be accessible “next week” with expectations of widespread upgrades happening shortly after.

For the Chang hard fork, which aims to usher in fully decentralized governance for Cardano, developers are laying down the groundwork for what they term as the “Age of Voltaire.” This phase sets out to revolutionize Cardano’s political landscape through significant network transformations outlined in Cardano Improvement Proposal 1694 (CIP 1694).

One of these transformations introduces Delegate Representatives (DReps), individuals elected by Cardano (ADA) tokenholders who will play a pivotal role in drafting a governing framework known as the Cardano Constitution. Once endorsed, this constitution becomes supreme law dictating future network amendments proposed by DReps.

Although Node 9.0 does not immediately activate DRep voting and other governance functions – features earmarked for version 10.0 – it does facilitate progress towards implementing CIP-1694 in live environments.

As preparations unfold for this monumental shift in governance, exchanges and stake pools are yet to align with requirements for the hard fork according to block explorer Cardanoscan. In line with plans detailed by Hoskinson, indications point towards an initiation of the hard fork process on July 8th or 9th after slight delays from initial projections set in June.

Cardano’s journey has seen recent obstacles with attempts to disrupt its network via distributed denial-of-service attacks necessitating swift responses such as node upgrades.
